Update: Organ Donor Enrollment Day- October 6, 2015- Over 3000 New York State Donate Life Enrollments

Our mission was to enroll New Yorkers so that they would be added to New York State’s Donate Life Registry. New York State is last in the country with respect to percentage of residents registered as organ donors. This contributes the fact that every 18 hours a New Yorker dies waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

The pitch was “ One day. One goal.” We volunteered at tables in order to help enroll New Yorkers in order to save lives.

We met with Assemblyman Lupinacci and he spearheaded efforts in tabling hosted at Stony Brook. Assemblyman Lupinacci recently shared with us that he sponsored a bill that would allow school districts in New York State to include organ donation and transplantation information in health class curricula. Assemblyman Lupinacci not only spent time at one of the enrollment locations, but he also followed the governor’s lead and declared October 6, 2015 “Organ Donor Enrollment Day.” The Assemblyman is generous with his time and is passionate about the cause.

All of the volunteers and staff participants subsequently found out that we actually broke the world record for total number of registry enrollments in a single day. The record was 2,200 and our final number of Donate Life Registry enrollments exceeded 3000. This number represents the counting of only the actual completed and signed forms that were collected on October 6, 2015.

LiveOnNY organized many teams and we were joined by elected officials as well inclusive of Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci, Senator John J. Flanagan, Senator David Carlucci, City Council member Costa Constantinides, and Senator Jose Peralta.

We were pleased to join LiveOnNY and many others for New York’s Organ Donor Enrollment Day. You have heard it before: one organ donor can save up to eight lives and one tissue donor can help improve the lives of up to fifty people. The concern is that although approximately 90% of New Yorkers agree with the concept of enrolling in the registry and that organ donation saves lives, only 25% of New Yorkers are enrolled in the registry at this time.

To help in this regard, we teamed with LiveOnNY, Stony Brook Hospital, North Shore-LIJ Health System, Long Island High Schools and Universities and many others for New York’s first-ever Organ Donor Enrollment Day.

On October 6th, I felt lucky to participate in this event while volunteering at tables located in two locations in Manhasset at The North Shore-LIJ Health System, soon to be rebranded as Northwell Health. We spent the day speaking with nurses, physicians, techs, surgeons, support staff, physician assistants, visitors and volunteers and each one had their own personal story they shared with us as they filled out the forms we provided.

I enjoyed volunteering with Dr. Ernesto Moment and the incredibly dedicated staff at North Shore Transplant and I have become very close with many of them.

I found it incredibly interesting speaking with so many people in the busy corridor and I actually had the experience of speaking with three people who enrolled in the registry while telling me about their lives on the road with a musician I worked with in 1993. They were visiting another musician all four of us worked with in the 80’s and 90’s as well. I’m always learning and I’m able to confirm that it’s a small world and we can certainly make a difference and help save lives when we volunteer.

Special thanks to all of LI TRIO’s dedicated volunteers who help so much throughout the year.

Congratulations to LiveOnNY and to all of the volunteers.–Mike Sosna

As we reported earlier:

Every 18 hours a New Yorker dies waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

The special day allocated to Organ Donor Enrollments was quite productive. We volunteered and worked to sign up New Yorkers in order to save lives. LI TRIO went out to the field to help support what Governor Cuomo has proclaimed “Organ Donor Enrollment Day”.

Our mission is always to enroll New Yorkers and the idea was to pool resources on October 6, 2015 and enroll as many New Yorkers as possible. A subtotal of 2700 people enrolled in the New York State Donate Life Registry (enrollment forms are still coming in) and we thank LiveOnNY inviting us to participate in this important event.

Our table at North Shore University Hospital was enormously productive.

As you know, there are over 10,000 people in New York State that need our help. New York State is 50th out of 50 states as far percentage of residents registered as organ donors.

On October 6th, we had volunteer opportunities where we helped enroll New Yorkers in the New York State Donate Life Registry. I personally learned a great deal from the experience while helping to enroll many people who have wanted to take that step for some time.
