September 2013 Meeting
Our special guest was Helen Irving, President and CEO of the New York Organ Donor Network. The topic of the evening was ““Clinical Advances In The Field Of Organ And Tissue Donation”.
As published on our LI TRIO Facebook group, there is great interest in the machines that preserve organs before they are transplanted. Helen Irving has great expertise with regard to this cutting edge technology. There is a kidney machine that preserves the kidney and can show how the kidney will most likely perform once it’s transplanted. There are lung machines and heart machines that actually allow the lungs and hearts to breathe outside of the body.
One machine is actually like a “lung in a box” and known as the Organ Care System. The device circulates blood through the lungs and pumps oxygen through the lobes. There is a new heart machine that keeps a heart warm, pumps blood through it and feeds it nutrients so the heart will beat outside the body.
Both devices are portable and can board an ambulance or helicopter along with the transplant team.
We really appreciate Helen Irving’s consistent support of our organization and thank her for sharing so much of her expertise with us. We also appreciate Helen’s consistent support and advice offered to our chapter.
